5Better than Ugg
By Cate
We love these boots! I don't think Ugg could possibly beat them for comfort, durability or looks. My husband has had this boot and I've had the women's high boot for 9-10 years. My husband tried on Uggs and every other sheepskin boot he could find before buying these. (Yes, he is the shopper, not me.) He says Old Friends have the thickest lining, most comfort and best tread. His only complaint is that he wishes they would make a men's high boot. Ten years out, and my husband's boots are going strong, except for replacing the sheepskin insole inserts once (easy pull outs). Mine are finally toast, but I've worn them indoors and out from autumn through spring, including winters when our primary heat source is an old wood fireplace. The boots are comfortable between 35-70 degrees more or less. Between about 14-35 they're only good for short jaunts outdoors (bringing in some wood, a run downtown, a few snowballs) unless you put socks in them, although you're not supposed to do this because it wears down the sheepskin insole. My husbands boots are true to his regular shoe size. I wear mine a size large because I like the extra room and sock option. After experiencing this boot, I can't believe Uggs are worth $70 to $100 more than any other sheepskin boot. Fully lined "sheepskin" and/or "shearling" being the operative words here (I think), as opposed to shorn wools and blends and partial lining, but it's tough to sift through all the misleading ads. Unfortunately, nobody - including Ugg - gives any relevant specs on the type of sheep, thickness or cold tolerance. I say, if Ugg wants double the price, they ought to tell me exactly why. I'm leaning toward the Bearpaw Dreamboot 12"($60-$70)as probably the closest un-ugg. My Old Friends are uber-uggs.

3I wanted to like the Old Friend boots but UGG boots won me over
By guy
I purchased a pair of size 11M Old Friend and a pair of size 11M UGG boots so that I could compare fit, comfort, quality, and look. First both boot brands are made in China. I tried the boots with no socks.

FIT: The UGG boots fit closer to the leg due to a smaller cuff diameter. In the Old Friend boots, the cuff diameter is larger so the boots feel looser around the legs. On the Old Friend boots, the feet fit slightly looser due to a thicker foot base. So a person with a thicker feet (not wider) would feel the Old friend boots more comfortable. Width wise, both boots are about the same.

COMFORT: Both boot brands have wonderful thick warm sheep/lamb fur on the inside. The UGG boots are about 1/8 lighter than the Old Friend boots. The sheepskin and the sole on the UGG's boot is more flexible compared to Old Friend.

QUALITY: Both boot brands are well made. However, The Old Friend boots have more stitching. So they look rugged and might last longer than the UGG boots.

LOOK: The UGG boots look refined compared to the Old friend boots. Due to the wider cuff on the Old Friend boots, pant legs do not easily go over cover the cuff. However, plenty of room is available to tuck them inside the boot.

4A good deal
By Lord5635
I purchased these boots as an alternative to getting another pair of UGGS which would have cost a hundred dollars. These were less than forty. The difference from UGGS is that were very stiff and smelled a bit like oil. I've had them for almost a year now and they are much softer with no smell. So in the long run they are turning out to be a nice warm boot.
